Houston Aeros’ defenseman Jamie Fraser is growing out his “mo.” The “mo,” Australian for moustache, is to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer research for Movember. Movember is an annual month-long event across the globe that involves men growing out their moustaches during the month of November. The moustache is a symbol for prostate cancer, similar to the pink ribbon for breast cancer.

“A few friends from home sent me a facebook invitation,” Jamie said. “I went on the website (
www.movember.com) to get more details and saw that it was a great way to support prostate cancer.”

Jamie created a page on the Movember site that allows viewers to easily donate money (

The rules of Movember state that each registered member must be clean-shaven on November 1st. Participants are not allowed to have their “mo” attached to their sideburns (a beard), no “handlebars” (a goatee), but a “tickler” (growth under the lower lip) is allowed. Movember’s site also allows participants to match up their “mo” to their style guide.

“I'm not sure exactly what my moustache is. I can't grow a great one,” Jamie first said. After checking out the style guide, Jamie responded, “I would say my moustache style is the box car!”

Although Movember started on November 1, Jamie still plans to get his teammates involved. “The guys had to have started on November 1, but I'm still trying. There are a few guys that may do it with me,” Jamie says. “If not, hopefully I’ll get the guys to support me and the cause in other ways.”

The motivation behind Jamie joining the cause is because of his grandfather. Jamie’s states on his page, “My grandpa has battled cancer before and I would like to raise money and awareness!! Also I would like to get Houston Aeros fans, teammates, and anyone else involved in the fight as well!!”

Beneficiaries of donations sent to Jamie on his page are the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Donations are tax deductible and those who support Jamie will receive an immediate email with an attached donation receipt. “I really want to get the word out to the public to try and raise as much money as possible,” Jamie says. “Anything I can do to try and help and also to learn more information about it. I'm hoping people read about it and make a donation. I want to get the word as best I can.”
