AEROS HOST WOLVES SUNDAY ON FIRST EVER ‘GO GREEN GAME’

CLEVELAND, OHIO – The Houston Aeros (9-8-0-0) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters (7-9-0-1) in front of 2,967 at Quicken Loans Arena. D Ryan Gunderson scored the lone goal for the Aeros and G Wade Dubielewicz stopped 20 of 22 shots in the loss. RW Brian Willsie, RW Darren Haydar and D Brian Fahey scored for Monsters; G Tyler Weiman made 14 saves in the win.

BOXSCORE

The teams played to a scoreless first period as the Monsters outshot the Aeros 7-4. Willsie put the Monsters on the board with the first goal of the game at 5:24 of the second period. The Monsters then took a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal at the 6:56 mark as Haydar scored his sixth goal of the season. It was just the third power-play goal allowed on the season by the Aeros who are ranked first in the AHL.

Houston responded late in the second period as Gunderson scored a power-play goal at 15:14. RW Danny Irmen found Gunderson in front of the net and the shot beat Weiman to the blocker side for the Aeros fourth power-play goal in three games. After going nine consecutive games without a power-play goal, the Aeros have scored at least one in each of the last three games.

The Monsters controlled the puck for much of the third period, outshooting Houston 7-0 more than halfway through the period. The Aeros received a power-play at the 13:37 mark and finally recorded their first shot of the third at 13:37. Houston was unable to score, however, and Fahey sealed the game at 19:02 after clearing the puck from his own goal crease and down the ice into the empty net.

Both teams finished 1-for-4 on the power-play, the Monsters out-shot the Aeros 23-20 on the game. Weiman earned his second victory of the season against the Aeros and improved to 5-6-0 on the season. Dubielewicz dropped his fourth consecutive start, allowing just two goals in each of the four starts. He is now 2-6-0 on the season.

The Aeros finish the weekend on Sunday as they return home to host the Chicago Wolves, 4:05 PM at Toyota Center. Houston is reminding fans to wear green and bring their used cell phones to the game to help support their first ever “green game.” The game can be heard in progress on 1070AM KNTH at 5:00 PM and in its entirety on ahllive.com
