HOUSTON AEROS FALL 7-2 TO STARS IN PRESEASON GAME
Aeros Head to Oklahoma City Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Cedar Park, TX – The Houston Aeros were defeated by the Texas Stars 7-2 in a preseason game at the Cedar Park Center on Wednesday night. Texas left wing Francis Wathier scored twice and added two assists, leading the Stars to victory. Houston forwards Carson McMillan and Nick Petersen each scored in the defeat. Texas goalie Jack Campbell made 22 saves in the win, while Houston goalie Darcy Kuemper made 18 saves in the defeat. The Stars went four of seven on the power play. The Aeros will head to Oklahoma City for a pair of preseason games on Friday and Saturday night.
Texas tallied the first goal of the preseason, as right wing Colton Sceviour found the back of the net for a 1-0 Stars lead. Center Travis Morin and defenseman Jordie Benn set up the power-play goal at 6:35 of the first. Houston countered with a goal off the stick of Carson McMillan at 10:57 of the opening frame. Forwards Josh Caron and Ryley Grantham each had an assist on the first Aeros goal, tying the game 1-1. Texas notched its second power-play goal of the period at 12:17, as Francis Wathier redirected a Toby Petersen shot, pushing the Stars in front 2-1. Jordie Benn added the second assist on the play, as the Stars carried a one-goal cushion into the break.
In the second period, the Stars notched their third power-play goal of the game, striking at 1:40 of the period. With a five-on-three advantage, Morin found Mike Hedden on the back-door feed, giving Texas a 3-1 lead. The Aeros countered with an even-strength goal at 7:31, trimming the deficit to 3-2 in favor of the Stars. Nick Petersen finished off a play with a backhand shot under the Texas crossbar and into the net. Kris Foucault and Chay Genoway set up the goal, bringing the Aeros within a goal after two periods of play.
The Stars scored three straight to start the third period, starting with Tomas Vincour’s tally at 6:06 made it 4-2. Texas added to the lead at 8:05 of the third, when Francis Wathier tallied his second goal of the night for the 5-2 lead. Just 1:14 later, Cody Eakin finished off a play in the Houston zone, bumping the Stars lead to 6-2 at 9:19. Texas defenseman capped off the scoring with a goal in the last minute, scoring at 19:07 for the 7-2 final.
The Aeros will play a pair of preseason games in Oklahoma City on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. (CT) at the Cox Convention Center.
The Aeros will play 76 regular-season games this season. The home portion of the schedule commences on Saturday, October 13, at 7:05 p.m. with the Charlotte Checkers at Toyota Center. The game will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Aeros game played by the World Hockey Association (WHA) team in 1972.
