WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
NOLAN SCHAEFER CHECKS IN ON HIS SUMMER VACATION

HOUSTON, Texas – Now that we are into the off-season, we thought it was time to check in with some of the Houston Aeros’ players, see what they have been up to this summer, and what plans they have for the off-season. Goaltender Nolan Schaefer was the quickest to the draw so we will honor the Harry “Hap” Holmes award winner by checking in with him first…

Hey Aeros fans!

I just want to start off by thanking each and every one of you for all of your support last season! I hope to see you all again at Toyota Center next season!

After the season was over, my wife and I stayed for a couple extra weeks in Houston, just to enjoy the sun and the city since we didn’t really get that chance during the busy season. We enjoyed Houston for those extra couple weeks then traveled back to Connecticut, where my wife is from, to continue her treatment for Lyme disease, and also visit her family.

She is showing significant improvement but we have to keep treating her until she is closer to 100 percent. I am planning on getting paperwork filed for my website www.unmasklyme.com as a non-profit organization. This way I can bring the charity’s money to actual families and people in need. I have been catching up on all of the emails in support of our fight against Lyme disease and working a lot on updating our site.

While in the Northeast I am planning to go to a couple of Yankees games. My brother, Peter (who plays for the Boston Bruins), sister and I have a golf tournament in Saskatchewan during July, which helps fund the small rink in my home town of Yellow Grass. Some of the money will also go to Lyme disease research. Last year the tournament raised $50,000 and we are hoping for even more this year. If you’re in Yellow Grass next month stop on by and play a little golf! I also just bought tickets to a John Mayer concert in August.

As far as hockey goes, I started training in late May. I like to start with lots of strength and flexibility training. As the summer goes on I work on getting quicker. When training camp nears, I will get on the ice more and more, just to get readjusted back into game shape. I pretty much follow the training routine given to me by the team trainers, but with a few goalie style twists.

I attend several Bikram yoga classes throughout the summer in a 100 degree room, which I really find helps with my balance, strength, flexibility, and focus. I juggle, hacky sack and do anything hand-eye related to train my eyes and keep workouts fun. I like to box with an old-school trainer in Connecticut and have found out the hard way that boxing is one of the toughest sports… after hockey.

That's pretty much it for the summer. But you never know what it holds, with our crazy life style, plans change. That’s a sneak peek into how I spend my off season. I look forward to getting back on the ice and playing some real hockey again this fall!

Have a great summer!

~Nolan Schaefer

Just as the players are gearing up for next season, so are the Aeros’ staff members and we have been putting together great ticket packages during the off-season. Back by popular demand is the Aeros “Elite Fleet” full-season ticket package that includes 40 games for the price of 30 and begins at just $360. The Aeros also have mini-plans of “25 for 22” and “15 for 13” in which fans can enjoy great season ticket holder benefits including a skate with the Aeros and merchandise discounts. Voucher books are also a great way to save on tickets. 10-packs are available and by picking one, fans will receive two free tickets to the game of their choice!

Stay tuned to AEROS.com for more player updates as they check in and share their summer stories with us. Don’t forget to take Chilly on the road with you and share YOUR summer stories with us. As part of Chilly’s Travels, if you take him the farthest from Houston and send us your photos you’ll win four (4) tickets and a photo op with Chilly at the 2008-09 home opener!
