What I Miss About Hockey

By Michael McHugh

I know. I know. It’s only been a week, but I already miss the game.

Two years ago was the first time that I got “hooked” on hockey. There is something about the sport that just kept me coming back for more. Maybe it’s the fast pace of the game, the action, the skill of the players on the ice, the skating, the face offs, the great people I have met along the way, or the excitement of the game. Whatever it is, I’m in.

I hope that next season more fans will discover the sport nationwide. I would love to see the seats fill up and the fans cheer. Hockey fans in the United States are colorful, loyal, and too few right now. So what can we do about that?

Take a friend to a game. They too will become hooked. I know I brought lots of new people to games this year, and every one went back for more. Next year, my journalism class wants to go to a game. All it takes is someone having a good time, telling someone else, and before long, hockey will be thriving in the United States.

It’s hard to believe it will be October before the season is upon us again. The guys will get some deserved rest, but I bet their minds will be heavy with thought, wondering what is going to happen to next year’s NHL season.

Where will they be? What decisions will they have to make in regards to their career? Will they come back? It has to be tough, knowing you’re one step away from making it to the NHL, yet not sure if there is even going to be one. I hope it all gets worked out. The fans and the up and coming players deserve it. In my opinion, it affects a lot of people, even those in the organizations themselves. A lot of people are out of jobs, and it just makes sense to get on with it.

I salute the Aeros team of 2004-2005. They were a great group of guys, and I will miss all those who don’t return. I hope it is because they landed in the NHL or better opportunities came to them.

I also salute the Aeros organization. They worked hard to make sure we were all entertained and had a good time at the games. They put in long hours, more than you can imagine, and I know that next year will be even better.

So what do I miss about hockey right now? Everything! But next year is around the corner, and I am counting the days.
