GRANLUND SCORES FOUR GOALS, LEADS THE AEROS OVER BARONS
Houston Rounds out Preseason with a 6-2 Win
Oklahoma City, OK – The Houston Aeros defeated the Oklahoma City Barons 6-2 at the Cox Convention Center on Saturday night. Rookie Mikael Granlund scored four goals and added an assist to power the Aeros to victory in the team’s preseason finale. Fellow rookie Charlie Coyle added two goals and totaled three points as Houston wrapped up the preseason at 1-2. Rookie goalie Darcy Kuemper was credited with the Houston win, playing the first 31:45 with 13 saves on 14 shots. Third-year pro Matt Hackett played the back half of the game in net. He made seven saves on eight shots in 28:15 of work. Barons’ goalie Yann Danis suffered the loss, allowing six goals on 29 shots. The Aeros open the regular season with the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday, Oct. 13th at 7:05 p.m. at the Toyota Center.
Granlund wasted little time, scoring his first goal at 9:36 of the first period. Forwards Charlie Coyle and Jason Zucker helped set up the opening goal for the 1-0 Houston lead. At 16:09 the Finish forward was at it again, putting the Aeros on the board for a 2-0 lead. Houston defenseman Chay Genoway had the lone assist on Granlund’s second tally of the night. With 2:50 remaining in the first stanza, Oklahoma City’s Tyler Pitlick trimmed the Houston lead to 2-1, beating Darcy Kuemper at 17:10.
The Houston power play managed the only goal in the second period, connecting for a 3-1 Aeros lead at 5:50 of the middle period. Defenseman Marco Scandella and Granlund each picked up an assist on Coyle’s first goal of the night.
The Aeros power play and Granlund continued the success in the third period. The 20-year old completed his hat trick at 4:07 of the final period. Defensemen Steven Kampfer and Scandella each had an assist on the play, expanding the Houston lead to 4-1. Just over five minutes later, Granlund scored his fourth goal of the night, beating goalie Yann Danis at 9:09 to make it 5-1. Defenseman Brian Connelly and winger Kris Foucault each had an assist on the power-play goal. The Barons answered back at 13:59, cutting the deficit to 5-2 in favor of Houston. Oklahoma City center Ryan Martindale beat Matt Hackett for his second preseason goal in as many nights. The Aeros countered with the final goal of the night at 18:20. Coyle netted his second goal of the evening. Forward Jarod Palmer had the lone assist as the Aeros finished the scoring at 6-2.
The Aeros open the 76-game regular season this coming Saturday. The home portion of the schedule commences on Saturday, Oct. 13th at 7:05 p.m. with the Charlotte Checkers at the Toyota Center. The game will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Aeros game played by the World Hockey Association (WHA) team in 1972.
