 CHECKERS SPOIL AEROS OPENER WITH 3-1 WIN
Houston Heads to San Antonio on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Houston, TX – The Houston Aeros (0-1-0-0, 0 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (1-0-0-0, 2 points) 3-1 in front of 8,132 fans on Saturday night at the Toyota Center. After two scoreless periods, Charlotte’s Tim Wallace and Chris Terry scored just 1:23 apart early in the third period to break open the game. Checkers goalie Justin Peters stopped 27 of 28 shots for the win. Matt Hackett suffered the loss for Houston, stopping 35 of 37. Aeros defenseman Jonas Brodin scored the team’s lone goal. Houston will play in San Antonio at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

After a scoreless first and second period of play, Charlotte’s Tim Wallace opened the scoring at 5:03 of the third period. Wallace shuffled in a rebound for the Checkers first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. The power-play goal was set up by Zach Boychuk and Justin Faulk. Charlotte made it 2-0 at 11:24, as Chris Terry put a rebound past Matt Hackett for a two-goal lead. Bobby Sanguinetti and Drayson Bowman each had an assist on the play. Houston cut the lead in half at 13:34 of the third period. Defenseman Jonas Brodin ripped a shot from the blueline, giving the Aeros their first goal of the season. Marco Scandella and Carson McMillan helped trim the Checkers lead to 2-1. The Checkers took advantage of an empty net in the last minute, as Jerome Samson tallied his first goal of the season with 55 seconds left in the third period for the 3-1 final score.

The Aeros will play in San Antonio at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The team will host a watch party at The Maple Leaf Pub. Houston returns to home ice on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:05 p.m. to host the Texas Stars. After a road game at Texas on Saturday, the Aeros return home to host the Milwaukee Admirals at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 21.
