HOUSTON AEROS COMEBACK IN OKC GARNERS 4-3 SHOOTOUT WIN
Aeros Welcome Grand Rapids to Toyota Center at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday
Oklahoma City, OK – The Houston Aeros (5-3-1-0, 11 points) defeated the Oklahoma City Barons (5-3-0-1, 11 points) 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday night in front of 3,406 fans at the Cox Convention Center. Houston erased a 3-0 deficit with three goals over a 2:48 span in the back half of the third period, tying the game and forcing overtime. Center Zack Phillips was instrumental in leading the comeback, setting up the last two goals in regulation. Phillips and Justin Fontaine each added a goal in the shootout. Aeros goalie Matt Hackett (2-3-0) stopped 24 shots in regulation and stopped all four attempts in the shootout to preserve the shootout win. Forwards David McIntyre and Joel Broda, as well as defenseman Chay Genoway sparked the rally in the final frame with a goal each. Barons forward Jordan Eberle scored twice in the first 5:44 of the third period, giving the Barons a three-goal lead prior to the team surrendering the lead later in the period. Barons goalie Yann Danis (3-2-1) made 25 saves in regulation and stopped two of four attempts in the shootout defeat. Oklahoma City center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored and added an assist, as the Barons fell to 1-1-0-1 against the Aeros this season. Houston will open up a four-game home stand on Sunday with the Grand Rapids Griffins at 5:05 p.m. at Toyota Center.
After a scoreless first period, Oklahoma City’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins picked up the first goal of the night a mere 57 seconds into the middle period. Defenseman Justin Schultz and forward Jordan Eberle each had an assist on the game’s opening goal.
Just ten seconds into the third period, the Barons claimed a 2-0 lead after Eberle scored his fifth goal of the season off a breakaway. Eberle picked off a pass and moved in alone on Hackett, finding a seam past the Aeros goalie and into the Houston net. Oklahoma City made it 3-0 at 5:44 of the final frame with a power-play goal by Eberle. Nugent-Hopkins and Schultz each added an assist on the play for Oklahoma City. The Aeros spoiled Yann Danis’ shutout bid at 9:44 of the third period. Winger David McIntyre finished off a scoring play, grabbing his second goal of the year from Justin Fontaine and Steven Kampfer. Houston took advantage of a power play at 11:35 of the third period. Defenseman Chay Genoway blasted a shot past Danis for a 3-2 deficit. Zack Phillips and Fontaine helped set up the power-play goal. The Aeros pulled even with the Barons at 12:28 of the third period. Joel Broda scored his first goal of the season, tying the game 3-3. Phillips had the lone assist on the equalizer by Broda, forcing overtime.
After a scoreless overtime the two teams went to a shootout to decide the victor. Houston scored on two of four attempts with Phillips and Fontaine burying their chances. Hackett did the rest, stuffing all four Barons attempts to seal the win.
Houston will return home on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. with the Grand Rapids Griffins at Toyota Center. This season, every Sunday home game is a Sunday Family Day. Aeros fans may purchase four tickets, parking and four Aeros gifts starting at $54. Sunday’s game marks the first of four straight at Toyota Center, continuing on Thursday, Nov. 8 with a 7:05 p.m. faceoff with the Toronto Marlies. It will be a “Thirsty Thursday” compliments of The Maple Leaf Pub. As part of the promotion, the Maple Leaf Pub will hand out a limited number of “2nd drink free” coupons prior to every Thursday night home game during the regular season. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive a Koozie, compliments of The Maple Leaf Pub.
The Aeros and Texas Army National Guard will host Military Night on Friday, November 9th. The first 1,500 fans will receive an Aeros Rally Towel, compliments of Texas Army National Guard. The team will also host the first of eight drives for charity throughout the season, starting with a Care Package drive for all military personnel overseas. Two tickets for select future games will be awarded for each donation (up to ten per person). The Aeros will also wear Camouflage jerseys.
The team rounds out its four-game home stand on Sunday, Nov. 11 with the Texas Stars at 5:05 p.m. at Toyota Center. This season, every Sunday home game is a Sunday Family Day. Aeros fans may purchase four tickets, parking and four Aeros gifts starting at $54.
